In a stunning incident, a person arrested for allegedly stealing a cell phone died in police custody. The demise created outrage in Khelmati space, Assam, prompting a departmental enquiry into the matter.
Rigidity prevailed in Assam’s Lakhimpur after an individual accused of cell phone theft died in police custody, stated the officers on Thursday.
As locals staged protests after the demise of the accused, two police personnel had been positioned beneath suspension in reference to the incident.
Lakhimpur Further Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) LK Deka stated the accused, who was sitting on a bench contained in the police station, immediately fell down and was instantly rushed to the civil hospital the place he was declared “introduced lifeless” by docs.
The in-charge of Khelmati Outpost, Dipankar Changmai, and one other personnel on responsibility, have been positioned beneath suspension, the ASP stated.
”For the reason that demise occurred contained in the police station, a departmental inquiry might be performed by an officer of the rank of ASP,” he added.
An enormous crowd had gathered in entrance of the police station since early morning to protest in opposition to the incident, and stress prevailed within the space, with senior cops dashing to the spot to manage the scenario, the officers stated.
Deka stated a magisterial inquest might be ordered into the incident and a panel of docs will conduct the autopsy, which might be videographed, to establish the precise reason behind the demise.
”Reference demise in police custody at Khelmati OP District North Lakhimpur – 1. IC of Khelmati OP has been positioned beneath suspension together with on responsibility sentry at time of incident. 2. Unbiased Enquiry has been ordered by Addl SP Biswanath. 3. All necessary provisions of legislation & instructions of NHRC/AHRC are being adopted 4. DIG NR has been directed to proceed to Khelmati instantly,” Assam Director Basic of Police G P Singh stated in a submit on X.
